Case Study - Metal Side Gate Enhances Security to Milton Keynes Property

Metal Side Gate Enhances Security to Milton Keynes Property

Situated in the outer suburbs of Milton Keynes, this owner of this residential property needed to purchase a metal side gate to ensure a pedestrian entrance leading to the rear garden could be adequately secured.

Client Brief

After many months of renovating the property the owner requested a high strength gate that would prevent access to the rear garden. This access point leads directly off the front driveway and as such the design needed to fit into the overall architectural style of the property whilst also offering design elements that would detract people from ever attempting to climb it.

For security reasons it was essential that the gate could be made to incorporate a lock that uses a key (rather than a padlock).

Our Proposal

Once we had established how the opening was formed and the current gap size between the house wall and the concrete fence post we were able to look at what options were available. Our initial thoughts were to recommend the Saxon, Corfe, and Hampton designs. We felt these would all work well given they feature fleur-de-lys finials which detracts people from trying to climb the gate. Having put this proposal to the customer they noticed that the Saxon steel specification was not as heavy duty as they had hoped and therefore discounted this design. They also did not like the subtle design difference in the way the bars line up on the Hampton gate therefore dismissed this option.

In terms of the best method of installation we felt that the gate would work best if it were to be hinged off the house wall and open inwards toward the garden. This would give the best access and would not require any space to be taken on the driveway making parking less of an issue. To achieve this, we recommend the use of a metal latch post set into the ground adjacent to the existing concrete one.

Finally, with reference to locking the gate the Corfe design is manufactured from box section steel and features a sliding latch to hold the gate closed however as a higher level of security was requested we also recommended the homeowner select the weld in lock for box section gates (in this case without the handle).
